Coursera is growing rapidly in Latin America. In the past year alone, we’ve added more than 5 million new learners and have seen more than 8 million enrollments in the region. We’re also proud to serve the region with various initiatives during the pandemic. In response to this demand, I’m thrilled to announce three new partnerships with top-tier universities in Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina to bring more high-quality, topical content to Spanish-speaking learners in the Latin America and around the world:

  • Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana — Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) is among the top 5 universities in Mexico and one of the most important institutions in the country. The university offers 82 undergraduate programs and 112 graduate programs to more than 59,000 students. Their first course Geometría Analítica Preuniversitaria launched today on Coursera and is taught by Professor Jorge Garza Olguín, PhD and researcher of UAM’s Basic Sciences and Engineering Division. UAM plans to expand their online catalog with additional general education courses.

“Considering how the pandemic has impacted in-person education, UAM is focused on creating online content to support professors and students. Our partnership with Coursera will enable us to generate more digital resources during this era of remote education and, once conditions improve, these materials can also supplement face-to-face teaching methods.” — Dr. Joaquín Flores Méndez, General Coordinator for Academic Strengthening and Cooperation at UAM

  • Universidad Nacional de Colombia — Universidad Nacional de Colombia (UNAL) is the largest public university in Colombia and is among the top 10 universities in Latin America. Their first course, Cuidando a la persona en situación crítica de salud en UCI, helps nurses care for patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit and is particularly relevant during the pandemic. Based on their own professional experience and knowledge, professors of the School of Nursery designed this practical course focused on attending to COVID patients. UNAL also plans to launch courses in basic physics and chemistry on Coursera.

“With this new course about how to care for ICU patients, UNAL hopes to make a positive impact in the Latin American region during the COVID-19 crisis. Together with Coursera, we aim to reach as many nursing professionals as possible — particularly in hospitals that are located far from universities where nurses can get relevant training. We also look forward to introducing online general education courses for undergraduate students of all disciplines.” — Professor Oscar Germán Duarte, Director of Academic Innovation at UNAL

  • Unversidad de Palermo — Based in Argentina, Universidad de Palermo (UP) is one of the most innovative universities in the region. It is the number one university under 50 years old in Latin America. Their new course, Psicologia, is live today with additional courses in business, psychology, and other areas to come.

“I’m thrilled to partner with Coursera and further expand our global footprint in online education. This alliance will allow us to widen our reach for a larger than ever and diverse international community of learners. We are reimagining education in the intersection of business, technology, design and the social sciences, while adapting to a new generation of students, using the best educational technology and focusing on the learners.” — Matías Popovsky, Vice-Rector of UP

We’re fortunate to partner with such renowned institutions in Latin America to provide our learners with even more high-quality learning opportunities, particularly during this challenging time. With these new institutions, Coursera now has 15 university and industry partners in Latin America, and more than 530 courses subtitled or natively in Spanish. Last year, we also announced our first Spanish-language degree program — an online master’s degree in software engineering from Universidad de los Andes in Colombia.

We’re excited by the opportunity a dynamic region like Latin America presents. Together with leading institutions like UAM, UNAL, and UP, we can help more Spanish-speaking learners across the globe transform their lives with the world’s best education.
